Bread & Bean Cafe: More Than Just Freshly Baked Breads

If you have read my post about Bread & Bean Café along J. Abad Santos St. in San Juan, you probably have an idea how I consider this café as one of those I hold dear to my heart. It has always been one of those I frequent to when I was still in college up to now that I am already working.

Needless to say, it has always been one of the few places I always feel at home. Memories have been accumulated all these years of my countless visits at the café. People whom I have shared a meal or two at Bread and Bean has come and go. Some remains, while others, well, they will always be remembered. Just like the fragments of memories I choose to carry with me, there dishes available at Bread and Bean Café that remains to be on the list of my favorites.

While they boast of freshly baked bread they are known for, Bread and Bean Café also offers rice meals, pasta dishes, and sandwiches that are equally satisfying. This is one of the reasons why I find it easy to spend the entire day at the café doing some paper works and finishing my writings because I wouldn’t starve nor get sick consuming bread and coffee alone.

Chunks of melting cheese wrapped in ham and thick slab of chicken breast covered with breading deep fried to perfection. Bread and Bean’s Chicken Cordon Bleu is by far one of the best I’ve had in years. I love that the breading itself is savory without overpowering the flavor of chicken and all the other ingredients. The gravy that comes with it complements the dish making it all the more flavorful. Whether it is paired with rice or mashed potato, it still is a wonderful treat to the palate.

The photo may not do justice to the actual dish, but every time I order Bread and Bean’s Grilled Pork Belly, I am always in awe at how big the serving has always been. The pork is tender, well marinated, and perfectly grilled. This dish always calls for an extra serving of rice. Always.

Smothered in mushroom gravy and served with fried egg, the Salisbury steak may look like just the usual burger steak we can get anywhere, but when it comes to flavor, it is ten times better. Every bite will ooze out juices that scream beefy goodness of a flavor in your face, making one want to grab spoonful of rice or a burger bun.

Boneless chicken with mushroom gravy doesn’t sound interesting to me, but when I tasted it, I was amazed at how tasty the chicken was. Hinting of herbs and spices, the chicken is moist and packed with flavor. It is already good on its own, but the mushroom sauce enhances the savory flavor of the chicken.

Three big savory meatballs on top of pasta in tomato sauce that evokes a push and pull among sweet, savory, and sour flavor is what Bread and Bean’s Bolognese is all about. I am very Filipino in a way that I favored sweet pastas most of the time, but it’s a different story when there are three big savory meatballs involved.

True to its name, Bread and Bean’s carbonara is creamy and packed with bits and pieces of bacon, mushroom, and chicken (or pork). I love that its creaminess isn’t overwhelming and the pasta is always al dente.

Al dente pasta, right amount of pesto sauce that isn’t overpowering, and generous slices of chicken made this pasta dish one of my favorites among the other pasta dishes offered by Bread and Bean.

I’ve already shred before how good the breads are at Bread and Bean, so it is pretty much expected that their sandwiches will be equally as good. I love their Ultimate Club Sandwich. Note just because of the bread, but because of everything sandwich in between those freshly baked breads. An order comes with potato chips and is good for sharing.

Generous slices of farmer’s ham sandwiched between ciabatta bread with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and the whole she bangs. Just like the ultimate club sandwich, it comes with potato chips and can be good for sharing.

These are just some of the varieties that Bread and Bean offers which I find myself always having. Their all-time Filipino favorites and other specialties are also impressive but it calls for another blog post since it’ll be a long list as well. While I am excited to the possibility of having different dishes on their menu, I am happy that Bread and Bean hasn’t stopped creating new line of breads and cakes to add to the numbers that they are already selling.

Recently I was able to try two of their new cakes; the Coffee Mocha Swirl and the Double Chocolate Cake. The Mocha Swirl is the reminiscent of the mocha cake I enjoyed during childhood up to this day. Layers of chiffon cake smothered with mocha cream and thin chocolate shavings on top. It is surrounded with chocolate champola sticks for added treat. The Double Chocolate Cake is made up of two layers chocolate pound cake covered with chocolate ganache, and in between are caramel cream and ganache.

Between the two cakes, my palate favored the double chocolate cake more since I am by nature a chocolate lover. But the mocha swirl isn’t bad either, only a tad lighter to the palate. I also noticed that their line of mini cheesecakes is also expanding, so I made a mental note not to forget trying those on my next visit.

I can say that I have witnessed how Bread and Bean grew from the time it carries a different name up to now that it is doing well on its own. That is why it will always be close to my heart. I am definitely one of those whose fingers are crossed for its future expansion since their products are definitely at par with other coffee shops bearing international trademark.

Jasmine, New World Hotel in Makati City

Yesterday I shared with you the Ultimate 18 Treasure Feast we had at New World Hotel’s Jasmine Restaurant in Makati City. It’s one of their special lunch and dinner menus that are available from January 18 to 30, 2012. While the magnanimous basin of 18 treasure feast was enough to satisfy our group, a la cart dishes were also served which left us all the more satisfied and filled.

Located at the 2nd floor of New World Hotel in Makati City, Jasmine boast of its authentic Cantonese fare coupled with impeccable service in an elegant ambiance. A marriage between modern flair and oriental style, Jasmine’s interior mirrors the aesthetic sense that will play in your palate in every dish that they offer.

After munching on some steamed peanuts, har gaw and pork siumai were the first to graced our table. After a bite of each, I realized that dimsum never tasted that good. Pork Siumai were very meaty and succulent. The har gaw or ha kaw were very nice to the bite. I love the little chewiness of the translucent covering. It doesn’t easily breaks which made it all the more exciting to eat because upon digging your teeth further, plump shrimp will welcome your palate in all its juiciness and glory.

Aside from the Ultimate 18 Treasure Feast, their Wagyu Beef and Mango Roll was my favorite that night. Thin slice of beef coupled with mango, wrapped in a thin crunchy puff pastry and tied with a strip of nori. The savory taste of the tender beef and the sweetness of mango blend perfectly well, while the crunchy texture of the wrapper adds an exciting flair to the bite.

Their Shrimp Mousse with Vegetarian Sauce looks like the usual shrimp balls but way tastier. It was made all the more savory with the vegetarian sauce that comes with it. I’m crazy about oysters so when the Deep Fried Oysters was served, I enjoyed it immensely. The distinct taste of the oyster was further enhanced by the minced fried garlic on top of it.

The Steamed Gizzard was tasty but a tad too chewy for me. Not really my favorite but I think it would be perfect accompaniment for beer on a drinking session. The Steamed Live Garoupa with Soy Sauce was impeccable. Perfectly steamed and it doesn’t taste fishy at all.

I was full by the time the Beef with XO Sauce was set on our table but it was too hard to resist not to grab a bite of two. Good thing I did because it turns out to be one of the best tasting beef dishes I’ve had. It was so tender while the XO sauce was a push and pull of savory sweet flavor that made the beef more pleasing to the palate.

Since the dinner was in line with the Chinese New Year, we were served buchi, tikoy, and almond jelly with mixed fresh fruits. It was the usual Chinese dessert but it was the perfect sweets to seal the night of wonderful Chinese dinner.

It was a pleasant dinner that made Jasmine Restaurant occupies a space in my heart. The food were lovely and the ambiance was comfortable. It’s the kind of hotel restaurant that I could definitely recommend for those who want to have authentic Chinese food with quality service.

Kung Hei Fat Choi Foodies! I believe that there couldn’t be any other wonderful way to spend this day and the rest of the Lunar New Year celebration than having a magnanimous feast which signifies bountiful blessings for the New Year. Thank heavens New World Hotel’s Jasmine Restaurant has something in store for us.

From January 18 to 30, Jasmine has special lunch and dinner menus which symbolize prosperity and luck in line with celebration of the Chinese New Year. One of them is the Ultimate 18 Treasures Feast prepared by Chef Choi Wing Ki which my fellow bloggers and I feasted on last week.

Aptly called the Ultimate 18 Treasures Feast, also popularly known as "Poon Choi" is a combination of 18 different lavish ingredients served on a big wooden basin. Lavish because the ingredients are known to be expensive and most of them are not available locally. More popular in Hong Kong and China, Poon Choi is usually served for Chinese Banquets and for some special occasion such as the Lunar New Year.

It was my first time to try Poon Choi and I was really overwhelmed by the magnanimous wooden basin set before us with layers of everything that screams authentic Chinese ingredients. While it can be pretty intimidating to look at, every bite of the 18 scrumptious ingredients simmered together in one bowl is a festivity of flavors that one should missed.

Meant to be eaten by layer, the deeper I dig into the feast, the more I feel acquainted with it, hence the more it pleases my palate. The 18 different lavish ingredients are abalone, sea moss, sea cucumber, dried oyster, fish maw, prawns, flower mushroom, eel fillet, roasted duck, chicken, pig knuckle, goose web, fish balls, dried squid, taro, radish, and bean curd stick.

Good thing about Poon Choi is that despite the diverse flavors from each of the 18 ingredients, there is still harmony in flavors that binds each distinct taste with one another perfectly well.

The Ultimate Treasure Feast is priced at Php14,888 for a table of 6 persons and Php29,888 for a table of 12 persons. The price can be pretty steep but note that Poon Choi is not the only dish that you will be feasting on. Aside from the Poon Choi, you will also be served the following:

Aside from the The Ultimate Treasure Feast, you can also try their 11-course lauriat set menu that includes dried oysters with sea moss, wok fried lobster fillet with yu ye fungus and celery, chicken and bamboo pith, prawns with broccoli, crispy scallop medallions and other mouth-watering dishes. This 11-course lauriat is priced at Php26,888 for a table of 12 person.

It’s not as if the Ultimate 18 Treasures Feast was not enough for our group, we were also served with some of the best tasting ala cart menu selections which are also available for their diners all year round.

Chinese New Year Celebration at Jasmine still continues with these awesome offerings until the 30th of this month. So, I recommend that you try it, especially the Poon Choi for a lucky year of the water dragon ahead!

P.F. CHANG’S CHINA BISTRO opens its first branch in the Philippines today at the Alabang Town Center

World renowned US-based casual dining restaurant P.F. Chang’s China Bistro opens its door today at The Street in Alabang Town Center. With over 200 branches in the US and 12 worldwide stretching from South America to the Middle East, its opening here in the Philippines mark as its 217th restaurants and its first venture into Asia.

A recipient of the 2012 Cheers Beverage excellence Award and 2011 Zagat Survey for Most Popular Service Chain, P.F. Chang’s still continues to constantly try to improve their products and give the best service that their valuable customers deserve, according to Mr. Philip Chiang, co-founder of P.F. Chang’s restaurant chain.


Genaro Perez Diaz (Director of International Marketing, PF Chang’s), Michael Welborn (President of Global Brand Dev’t, PF Chang’s), Philip Chiang (co-founder, PF Chang’s restaurant chain), and Archie Rodriguez (President and CEO, Global Restaurant Concepts, Inc.)

During the media launch last Tuesday, we were sampled with some of the dishes in their menu including some of their best sellers. Inspired by the different regions of China with a touch of influences from across Asia, their dishes evokes simplicity and uses only natural fresh ingredients with no garnishes and artificial flavors. Simple in appearance, but big in flavors. P.F. Chang’s also serves signature cocktail drinks, wines, and desserts.

I will be posting a detailed review about their food on a separate blog post, but to give you a glimpse of what we had feasted on, here are some of the photos.

“Meal Creators” is what they called their food attendants are all well trained to give personalized memorable dining experience to their diners. We have several meal creators who attended to our table during the launching and I noticed that everyone was not just accommodating but very knowledgeable as well about the dishes that they served.

P.F. Chang’s partner in the Philippines is Global Restaurant Concepts, Inc., by president and CEO Archie Rodriguez. Global Restaurant Concepts, Inc. is the same operator that handles popular restaurants in the country such as California Pizza Kitchen and Orchard Road. When asked what decided them to bring P.F. Chang in the Philippines, Mr. Archie Rodriguez said “When looking for restaurants to bring home, we like to consider a few simple factors: Is our personal experience at the restaurant consistently memorable? Is the food good and fresh, using the best ingredients? Is the service and culture above par? Is the concept sound? Will the menu and atmosphere appeal to families? We believe PF Chang’s scored high marks in all of these categories. And, we are excited to share our experience with the rest of the Philippines.”

Also, according to Mr. Rodriguez, while they are focusing on making sure that they not just meet but exceed their diner’s expectation for their first branch at Alabang, a Fort Bonifacio location is already in the planning stage.

I personally enjoyed everything that was served to us during the launching. There’s no single dish that I didn’t like, and I tell you, that rarely happens. I will be dishing out my thoughts on their food on a separate post, but meanwhile, you may visit P.F. Binondo Food Wok with Ivan Man Dy

Nothing beats being introduced to the place full of rich cultural heritage and history while eating your way through them. That is what I have experienced at the start of this year when I joined fellow foodies at The Binondo Food Wok with Ivan Man Dy of The Old Manila Walks.

When we were told that our tour isn’t going to be the popular tried and tested Big Binondo Food Wok but rather a tour of Ivan’s personal favorite just in time for the Lunar New Year, I knew that I needed to extend my holiday vacation. On January 23, we will be celebrating Chinese New Year that is why I deemed joining the tour couldn’t be more apt.

I am not really familiar with Binondo. As a matter of fact, for the fear of losing one daughter in the streets of Manila, my father took some of his time to drop me by at the Binondo Church, the meeting place for the tour. It was an unchartered territory since the only restaurant that I am familiar with at the area is our family’s favorite, The President Tea House. So, alongside with some of my favorite foodies, I took the fun and exciting gastronomical 4-hour walk to Binondo.

After meeting at Binondo Church, Ivan led us to a narrow street called Carvajal. It houses food vendors selling variety of fruits, vegetable, dried fish, and other produce. It is also the location of our first stop, The Quick Snack. A hole-in-the-wall foodie place that has been in operation for almost 50 years. Although Chinese by nature, their menu has an Indonesian influence since the Chinese owner came from Indonesia. I find it fascinating that some of the food attendants have been with them for more than a decade or so now.

Ivan told us that we are going to have our “Appetizers” here. So, I expected a small portion of food which can even be eaten even while standing up since the place looks pretty jam packed for me. Then these manas from heaven graced our table.

One of the first dishes that were served to us was the Fried Lumpia (Php 55). I am not a fan of lumpia, but this one was so different it made me a convert. Packed with minced meat and vegetables, this fried lumpia’s crunchy texture was such a treat that goes perfectly well with the white vinegar. Kuchay Ah (Php 40) resembles that of a meat pie or empanada, only it has kuchay inside. It has a great tasting pastry and generous stuffing which can fill one up easily. Oyster Cake (Php 180) was an interesting dish for me. It was a welcome change from the usual baked oyster that I normally order from restaurants.

Sate Mi (Php 135) is a noodle dish which taste I find really interesting. I guess its authentic taste that regaled my palate that time, but whatever it is, I’ll surely order for it the next time I visit. Indonesian Tauhu (Php 75) is a fried tofu dish, only a million times better. I almost missed trying out this one because it looked spicy to me at a glance. Good thing that Richard talked me into trying it because hail to the mother of all tofu; it was so good I could eat the dish for the rest of my life! Crunchy outside but unapologetically soft inside, it goes perfectly well with the sweet sauce hinting of lemongrass.

After our stop for Ivan’s definition of “Appetizer” we continued walking towards Nueva St. until we reached the corner where Holland is located. Known for its Hopia and other Chinese delicacies, Holland showcased different hopia flavors which I find really interesting. A Tikoy shaped like a Coy fish was also showed to us aside from other goods that Holland carries.

After more walking from our last stop, we found ourselves by the most photographed street signage at the area which reads “ONGPIN” with a quirky inverted letter N printed on it.

Then we head on to Salazar St. where Po Chuan Tin Bakery is located. Home of the original hopia in Ongpin, this downright simple bakery is owned by a Chinese couple that have been keeping their traditional way of making hopia alive all through the years.

We also passed by a Chinese turo-turo which boasts of wide variety of viands and other food that they sell. If all turo-turo in Manila were as nice looking as this one, I may need all the time in the world for more food tripping.

We also passed by some of the food establishments I have heard of but have not tried yet. The more we unravel the streets, the more reason I gather for me to steel my resolve to go back at the area in the future.

When we stopped by at the corner of Salazar and Masangkay St., Ivan pointed us a National Historic signage which isn’t really noticeable if you happen to passed by the area. Turns out, the original manuscript of Jose P. Rizal’s NOLI ME TANGERE was kept hidden in the place for a time. The remains of our National Hero were also kept hidden there for a few days right after the exhumation from the Paco Cemetery. I didn’t know that until that day Ivan dished out the historical tidbit.

From Salazar and Benevidez St. we continued walking until we reached our “Sichuan Lunch” stop at Rosso Asian Kitchen located at Gandara St. Ivan told us that the restaurant used to offer pasta and other food which doesn’t really reflect the dining scene at Binondo. After the owner tweaked the menu and made some changes, it became one of Ivan’s favorites.

At Rosso, we were served their JI GONG BAO Shabu-Shabu. Now, this Shabu-Shabu is different from the usual Hot Pot that we all enjoy in other restaurants. It’s a Sichuan style Hot Pot where you enjoy the braised meat of your choice over fire first, then your pot will be filled with broth, and that’s the time when you can put your choices of meats, vegetables, and balls into the pot.

Then, enjoy your Ji Gong Bao!

Aside from the Ji Gong Bao, we were also served with Szechuan Water Cooked Beef (Php 338) and Szechuan Twice Cooked Pork (Php 248). Both were good, especially the twice cooked pork, but my palate prefer the Ji Gong Bao more since it really was an explosion of different flavor made all the more spunky with its spicy taste.

After our hefty lunch at Rosso, more walking ensued which we gladly took, in the hope that it can somehow help in creating more space in our tummy for one last stop at Sa Lido Restaurant.

Since I was the only lady in our group, when we entered Sa Lido, Ivan playfully told me that I’ll be a bit out of place. I wasn’t aware what he meant by that until I looked around me and noticed that most of the customers were all men! It didn’t bother me at all because I tell you, in the company of good food, I can be asexual, so really, no big deal.

It wasn’t even an hour had passed since we had our lunch at Rosso, but Ivan must have loved our group so much, or anyone who joined The Big Binondo Food Wok for that matter, because despite the level of fullness that everyone was experiencing at that time, we were asked to order anything that we liked on the menu. That is on top of the best sellers he had already ordered for our group.

The only thing that was on my mind that time was a cup of Siphon Coffee that Sa Lido is famous for, so that’s what some of us ordered. I was this close to saying no to other dishes that graced our table but since I was in the company of some of the best foodies in Manila, I was easily swayed into having my fair share of some of the best dishes that Sa Lido offers to their customers.

Their Chami may look as simple as it can get, but it was the best tasting Chami I have tried. The generous ingredients scream flavors that I cannot soon forget. Since I love shrimps in general, I also tried their Camaron. Its batter tasted good while the shrimp were juicy despite its size.

Sa Lido is also known for their Pugon Cooked Asado. Cooking the posrk in a wood fire oven really does make a big difference in terms of taste, so as expected, the Asado was superb. When I heard that Ivan ordered for Hototai, I got too excited because last time I had it was during my elementary days. It was good in a way that it evokes good memories. For our dessert, we were served with a gorgeous bowl of Almond Lychee. It was a perfect way to seal the four hour of walking and eating at the streets of Binondo.

I couldn’t think of any best way to start my year other than joining this food walk with Ivan Man Dy and other foodies. It was an experience that doesn’t just focus on eating because bits and pieces of knowledge and information were dished out along the way. Honestly, it opened my mind into something so rich and beautiful way beyond what meets the eye.

Indeed it is one tour that I would suggest everyone to take even for once in their life because it was worth it. Knowledge and food will always be worth it.

I have been receiving invites from everywhere asking me to try their service and products not food related. So I guess now is the best time for me to give way and share my thoughts on these things to you my dear readers. I hope you stay with me as I tip toe my way slowly into expanding my blog. But do not worry, since YedyLicious is still primarily a food blog, I will always be dishing out all things delicious as we all eat our way through living the good life.

There couldn’t be a better way to start this segment than to write about something I believe in. With that, let me share with you my experience at Browhaus located at the 2nd floor of Serendra in Taguig City.

Browhaus is your one-stop urban grooming pitstop which offers brow and lash grooming services. We know for a fact that eye brow can make a whole lot of wonders to our look. That is why at Browhaus, they make it a point to give their client the best possible service they can offer, to give their valued clients the confidence to present their best face forward. Always.

My sister and Tab

Last Saturday, my sister and I had an appointment at Browhaus. We met Tab Abad, owner of Browhaus Manila and had a little chat about the services they offer. Speaking with Tab gave me a whole new perspective about the science and the art of brow beauty. I used to not care about my brow but after our session at Browhaus, I realized that indeed it made a difference in my look as compare to the usual tweezers and mirror process that I normally do.

Wall of Reviews and Raves About Browhaus

Browhaus is a franchise that Tab brought from Singapore. It has 2 branches here in Manila, one located at Serendra while the other is at Greenbelt. A 2 to 3 months of training done annually by the experts from Singapore to secure the level of skills and expertise of their Brow Architects. Aside from their commitment to quality by using and upgrading products and equipments, they also conceptualize quirky campaigns which mirror their creativity and commitment to the industry.

During our visit, we tried their Browgraphy which mainly focus on two things; shading and shaping. My sister has had a problem in terms of dealing with her brow since she got her hair colored. Aside from that, uneven growth was also a challenge. Uneven brows that doesn’t match with colored hair isn’t really the most pleasing appearance that one can have, so we deem that it is best for her to have it fixed at Browhaus.

The process started with coloring of the brows. They use 100% vegetable-based dyes so it’s completely safe. Tab told us that it is a big no no using the same dye that is used to color one’s hair to color your brows. I have also experienced the Browgraphy and despite my mean allergies, I didn’t experience any allergies not uncomfortable feeling during the process. I got mine colored in the shade of dark brown by the way.

The color tweak lasted for about 8 minutes but it depends on how light you would want your brows. Since my sister has a light brown hair, the process took for about 10 minutes. When the desired color was achieved, the process of shaping the brows through threading begins.

After the threading, they put a cold cream to the brows aptly called “ice cream,” but not the real thing, to lessen the redness and to close the pores of the skin. Couple of minutes more, then my sister looked well groomed with a spanking new colored and nicely shaped eye brows! Since they lighten the color of her brows, it goes perfectly well with the color of her hair now. It was also shaped into something that compliments the shape of her face. She’s so happy about the outcome the same way I am happy about mine.

One of the many things I love about Browhaus, you would know for yourself that the Brow Architects are very knowledgeable in what they do. They explain the step by step procedure while they are doing them so that their client would know the progress of the session. After the session, they would give you after care tips as to how you can maintain the good looks of your new brows.

Aside from the services (listed below) they offer, they also have products in which you can’t buy anywhere else but at their stores.

Browhaus takes precision seriously. I witnessed that after having a session with them. For that, I have no doubt recommending them to anyone. I’ve never had my brows well groomed in perfect precision before, but Browhaus gave me that. My sister has been raving about it since, so obviously she’s very happy with the service. Just like anything else, maintenance is the key for long lasting good look so we will definitely go back to Browhaus for our brow care. I am also thinking into trying their Lash Services in the future.

For years now I have been hearing about Juan Carlo the Caterer. From friends who have become their clients for years now, to others who constantly rave about them after experiencing their superb food and wonderful service. I have attended an event before in which Juan Carlo The Caterer provided the service. I was impressed from the get go. Same goes for the others who was was on the same event.

When our friends from Nuffnang Philippines invited me to attend Wedding Library’s Weddings and Debuts Bridal Fair 2012 Press Conference held at Plaza Ibarra last January 12. I have once again able to witness how Juan Carlo the Caterer pleased the guests with their delectable dishes and suberb service.

Through this event I learned that Juan Carlo the Caterer is owned by the couple Alex Michael Del Rosario and Teresita Macatangay del Rosario. Named after their only son, their catering service started November 11 of 1995, months after Alex decided to go back here in our country after working at Saudi Arabia.

What started as a simple catering business in the Southern Tagalog Region has now flourished into a big name in terms of catering services even here in Manila.

Their commitment to excellence and their unmitigated focus was what carried them through the years of successful sail in the food industry. Aside from the opening of their new office located at Quezon City, continuous development in terms of food service and professionalism in the business provided the support in keeping the business on top of its game.

Gong Cha Philippines is Now Open at Il Terrazzo Tomas Morato, Quezon City

When my friend D and I decided to have a dinner last night at Banapple in Il Terrazzo, Tomas Morato, I was happy to know that they already moved their store to a much bigger place. Still at the second floor of Il Terrazo, but this time they are occupying the space right beside their original location. While I am happy about this move, what made me happier is that the seventh store of Gong Cha Philippines is now occupying the space Banapple used to occupy

They opened last January 11, 2012 and they are still on a soft opening as of yet.

I had my first try of Gong Cha Milk Teas at their SM North Edsa Branch and decided to visit again to try their other drinks. It didn’t materialize since most of their branches are far from where I am residing, except from SM Megamall which I don’t usually frequent to. Good thing that they opened a branch at Tomas Morato, a place I usually visit if I want to go crazy with many options of restaurants to dine in.

While I love their Caramel Milk Tea, their house special Gong Cha Winter Melon Tea is what I am crazy about as of yet. But I am still exploring and still looking for something on their menu that will make me rave the same way I rave about Happy Lemon.

Gong Cha is well known milk tea brand which originates in Taiwan. It has over 200 stores located in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Dubai, and Philippines. I was told that the next store that they will be opening will be located at Alabang Town Center, so, hurray to the people in the south!

New and Improved FERSAL HOTEL, A Relaxing Experience at the Heart of the City!

Recently, amidst the craziness brought about by the holiday season, I came into a point wherein I would willingly give out a limb in exchange of one night of relaxation away from everything that I was busy with. That time I knew I needed an escape. A break. Good thing that I was able to schedule myself to an overnight stay at the Makati site of the new and improved Fersal Hotel.

Given the rather hectic schedule that I had and other tons of tasks at hand during that time, booking myself a flight somewhere far would spell irresponsibility. The proximity of Fersal Hotel in Neptune St. Makati from where I am residing is just enough for me to feel that I am far enough to have a breathing space from the usual, but near enough not to spend the entire time I have allotted for my escape on the road.

Deluxe Double Bed

Since I was booked to an overnight stay at their Deluxe Double Bed Room I decided to tag along my cousin who I haven’t seen for quite a while. I deemed that it was perfect time to catch up over bags of chips while doing movie marathon inside our hotel room. It was just like the old times made special since Fersal Hotel provided us the comfort that made us feel at home. The comfort of your own home at the heart of the city, says the hotel’s tagline, and I agree.

Known for its decent, homey, and family-oriented image, Fersal Hotel’s recent upgrade in terms of rooms, facilities, and service is really impressive. But what impressed me the most is the affordability of their rates which are flexible depending on the location of the hotel. There are currently 6 Fersal Hotels in the Metro (P. Tuazon Cubao, Annapolis Cubao, Malakas Diliman, Kalayaan Diliman, Andalucia Sta. Cruz Manila, and Neptune Bel-Air Makati) and you may check the rates here.

It was my first time at Fersal Hotel and given the affordable price they offer I was honestly not expecting much. However, from the moment that I spoke to their reception personnel up to the time that we left the hotel completely satisfied, I was in such awe that we got one of the best accommodations to date. I am big when it comes to service, and Fersal Hotel is definitely one of those which impressed me the most.

The room that we got was equally impressive as their service. I love the homey feel to it which sort of reminds me of my own room. The smell of the entire room was really good. Repainted rooms comes with the recent upgrade of the hotel, and I am more than happy that there's no single trace of stench that was left. Good air-conditioning unit, comfortable beds, and impressive hotel quality mattresses aided me in having a relaxing sleep that I needed.

The mini refrigerator, electronic pot, bottled water, as well as complete complementary coffee and tea facilities were provided on the minibar. The closet was spacious enough for two person and it has safety deposit box for valuables.

Despite the simplicity of the comfort room, I appreciate the cleanliness and the good smell of it. Complimentary bathroom kit were also provided. Impressive good quality towels were also available for your hot or cold shower time.

Complimentary Wi-Fi

While I was enjoying myself watching movies on the hotel's LCD TV, my cousin was raving about how fast their wi-fi service is. I vow to put my online life in a halt for that day but for the sake of trying the complimentary wi-fi that comes with our accommodation I tried connecting through mobile phones. Indeed, the connection was really fast it was tempting to go online until the next day, which I did.

Good Morning Sunshine!

After watching several movies on cable, exchanging stories, pigging out, and chatting with our other cousins online, we got ourselves a good night sleep and woke up the next day to a beautiful breakfast from Fersal Hotel's Cafe Inn.

I was planning to have a breakfast at the cafe located at the ground floor of the hotel, but I was really enjoying my time under the sheets so we decided to have the breakfast delivered to our room instead.

We had Inn Cafe's Beef Tapa Filipino Breakfast, Spanish Omellete with toasts, additional order of sweet ham, orange juice, and coffee.

It was a simple breakfast, albeit a satisfying one. I was impressed at how good their beef tapa was. There are only few restaurants which can satisfy my palate when it comes to beef tapa, and now Cafe Inn adds to the list. The beef was so tender and the push and pull of the savory and sweet taste of it calls for an extra garlic rice smothered with the golden yolk of a fried egg. It was heavenly. The Spanish omelet was good as well because it was perfectly seasoned and cooked to my liking.

After breakfast we still had time to enjoy the remaining hours of our stay. Before we checked out we took time to visit the Inn Cafe. It's fairly small but cozy and clean. I made a mental note to go back at the cafe to try some of their dishes, I heard that they serve mean creamy cheesy lasagna and chicken galantina. The cafe is open everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 6am to 10pm. Another services that they offer at the hotel are the convenience store and the spa and massage services.

All in all, our stay at Fersal Hotel in Neptune St. Makati was an enjoyable one. I am satisfied with the accommodation, facilities, and service in general. I think the main thing that this hotel can be proud of is their ability to provide a high quality accommodation at a very affordable price. This is the kind of hotel that I would definitely recommend to anyone who needs an affordable hotel accommodation with high regards to quality and true Filipino hospitality.

While I am confident that I will still go back to Fersal Hotel in Neptune Makati, I am also curious in trying out their other branches especially their sister brand located at Cebu and Baguio City named Hotel Elizabeth. Maybe in my future travel, which I promise to share again with you.

Yes, It's More Fun in the Philippines!

I guess by now my dear readers all of you have probably seen the Department of Tourism’s campaign, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”.

I sincerely believe in it.

That being said, just like some of our fellow Filipinos, I am showing my support by heeding to DOT’s call to help in spreading the awareness to this campaign. (Read Anton’s post about it here)

I believe that this step is not just following through a bandwagon out of sheer force of habit. Instead, this is something that must be supported despite the negative criticism, because this is for our country.

Besides, it’s FUN to think of some reasons out of thousands or more why you believe that indeed, #ItsMoreFUNinthePhilippines

Cocoa Cheese Froth at Teaberi

You probably have an idea by now how Happy Lemon rocked my world, specifically their Cocoa with Rock salt and Cheese. While I am crazy about milk teas in general, these drinks boasting of cheese on top are something I couldn’t bend my conscience quite enough to ignore. When I visited Teaberi in Makati recently, it was their Cocoa Cheese Froth which got my attention.

Located beside David’s Tea House just right outside the Makati A.Venue Mall, Teaberi is a new player in the field of milk tea shops which I find promising.

Since it is Happy Lemon’s Cocoa with Rock salt and Cheese that I find to be the culmination of everything good about cheese and cocoa mixed together by far, it has always been my point of comparison when it comes to my choice of cheesy drinks.

In terms of the cocoa, I find Teaberi’s lacking in that chocolatey kick that I normally get from Happy Lemon’s. The cheese froth however was good but a tad milder than that of happy lemon because hey, they didn’t claim that it has rock salt on it, so I am fine with that. It still has the cheesy taste that I want from my drink.

Large size Cocoa Cheese Froth is priced at 120 Php while the medium is at 110 Php. A bit expensive than some of their competitors but obviously, location has something to do with the pricing. I was told that as of yet, it is the only store they have but they are looking into expanding in the future.

Basically, Teaberi’s Cocoa Cheese Froth may lack on the richness of the cocoa and cheese as compare to Happy Lemon’s Cocoa with Rock salt and Cheese, but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth the try. It is definitely something that I will order again after trying out other drinks on their menu.

Pre-Dinner Cocktail at Pan Pacific Manila

Couple of days before staying at Pan Pacific Hotel Manila, my sister and I planned to visit several restaurants around the area.

That didn’t materialize.

But that’s perfectly fine with us because the decision to stick to the goal of enjoying Pan Pacific Hotel Manila, including their food offerings was probably the best decision we’ve ever made that time.

You’ll know what I mean as I progress dishing out in series of blog posts what we had feasted on during the stay.

Breakfast Buffet at Pan Pacific Hotel Manila

Moving forward, our hotel accommodation includes pre-dinner cocktail among many others. I can’t wait to share with you our dinner and lunch private dining experiences, but let’s not get to that until I share with you what we had during the pre-dinner cocktail.

We arrived at the hotel around 2 in the afternoon. After couple of minutes of smooth transaction with the reception, we were then led to our hotel room. We were told that their pre-dinner cocktail will be served at 6pm to around 8pm, I think. We just had enough time to freshen up, do some photo shoot, and then some.

Around 6:30 pm we went at the 21st floor of the hotel where the Pacific Lounge is located. Food were gracing the buffet table and people were having a great time chatting with their companions while enjoying the food.

Although the spread wasn’t as big as their breakfast buffet, the line up was pretty impressive considering it’s just a cocktail which are meant to whet the appetite and not fill the tummy.

Obviously that “whet the appetite” thing didn’t matter to me because my appetite is always on a full blast, and with the spread teasing me with such abandon, my tummy was filled in no time.

The photos didn’t do justice as to how hefty our pre-dinner cocktail was. Although I already have an idea how impressive the food at Pan Pacific Manila are, it still amazes me how consistent they are when it comes to pleasing my palate.Although the food line up varied from time to time, the consistency in terms of taste can still be expected in every dish.

If I were on a diet, I could treat this cocktail as a dinner. But I wasn’t *insert evil grin here*, so after a couple of hours, my sister and I were ready for dinner.

The dinner was another story which deserves its own post. But let me tell you ahead of time that it left me and my sister staring at number of plates for good five minutes, speechless. Wonder why? Come back here again and I will tell you our hilarious dinner story in the coming days.

Sparkling New Year Party at Pan Pacific Hotel Manila

I was supposed to write about a teaser about the grand dining experiences ( mind the plural ) I had at Pan Pacific Hotel Manila but I decided to give way to this post first because our friends from Pan Pacific Manila enthusiastically shared with us the wonderful and sparkling new year’s party they had as they welcomed 2012.

No, I wasn’t able to take part of the celebration because as tradition dictates, I was with my family at home cooking up more than 12 dishes before the clock strikes 12. ( do you guys also practice this belief? 12 dishes to represent each month of the year, much better if more than 12 for a prosperous year. We do. All the time. Tiring, but fun.)

While I wish I was there at the party, I also had a great time with my loved ones. I am just glad to know that they had a grand time at the hotel as wel, after all, it’s Pan Pacific Manila hey, who wouldn’t have a grand time staying with them?

Pan Pacific Manila together with their guests and butlers celebrated New year stylishly with their New Year Spark Countdown Party held at the Pacific Lounge of the hotel. They welcome the year 2012 with the grandest party made all the more upbeat and funky by the songs played by the band Soul Republiq.

City lights and early fireworks were enjoyed by the guests as they feasted on buffet spread which includes carving stations of herb crusted prime ribs and Australian leg of lamb, seafood selections such as lobsters, oysters and herbed steamed Crabs, hot dishes of pepper crusted salmon fillet, potato, spinach and seafood gratin, and chicken coq au vin, grilled servings of pork chops, tuna and salmon fillets, and pork, hungarian and veal sausages, with sweet desserts such as raspberry bavarois, mango chibousts, assorted french macarons, chocolates and cookies.

Surprises and good treats were given to their lucky guests as they raffled off pre-dinner cocktails for four persons, pood and beverage credits and overnight stays with breakfast for two.

All guests were led to the hotel’s helipad as they welcome the new year in awe with the hotel’s fireworks display while sipping their sparkling wine courtesy of Pan Pacific Manila.

I already expected that they will be having a wonderful new year’s party because hey, it’s Pan Pacific Hotel Manila. I am somehow familiar with how they roll when it comes to celebrations. That’s why they will always be one of my favorites.

If Moshi Koshi along Shaw Blvd. is the Noodle Boss, I am willing to be a noodle slave.

This new Japanese Diner which specializes in fresh noodles is a new player in the field that foodies and non foodies alike should not be missed. For those who have penchant for noodles, you may find a new favorite in Moshi Koshi.

Personally, I am not big when it comes to noodles. Rarely do I find a restaurant which noodles suits to my liking, hence, I rarely post a review or feature anything about it. But Moshi Koshi is impressive enough for me to rave about it. After being invited to check out what they can offer, I became a convert.

My visit one afternoon at their place isn’t only enjoyable but educational as well. I never thought that there are certain guidelines to follow in order for one to achieve a maximum satisfaction in eating noodles.

Koshi is that sweet state of a noodle that is tender and chewy, firm but not hard, with resistance to the bite. People, especially Japanese who are passionate about authentic noodles are always after for that specific state of their noodles. At Moshi Koshi, to ensure that they do serve koshi noodles, they make them fresh every day at their in-store sanitized noodle room and cooked with the use of state-of-the-art noodle cooker straight from Japan.

Shio or salt-based broth is known to be the most simple and unpretentious of all the broth that can be added to a ramen noodles. Despite its simplicity, the freshly made ramen noodles and the butter corn made all the difference. The koshi state of the noodles was further highlighted by the salty sweet push and pull of flavors and the playful textures of other ingredients such as the corn, fish cake, and bamboo shoot.

It was a challenge for me at first because I am not a fan of udon noodles perhaps because of past experience, but Moshi Koshi has its own way of making me feel that it’s like tasting everything for the first time. The thick udon was firm and very filling. While I love its noodles, its broth which made me loved it all the more. Its distinct flavor goes perfectly well with the slices of beef that were tender and savory.

I was still taking photos of the food when the very friendly food attendant reminded me that the koshi state of the noodles can last for about 6 to 8 minutes only that is why we were encouraged to consume it immediately as fast as we can. Yes, you can slurp your noodles away and you wouldn’t get a questioning look because they even encourage it. Big portion of servings were very apparent. For me, it even looks like a serving can be for sharing.

While they specialize in noodles, Moshi Koshi also offers donburi, bento box, and other sidings among many others. I have tried their Kani Salad and Potato Salad which were equally tasty and satisfying.

My friend Ceej who I was with during my visit is crazy about Katsudon. While he favored Sumo Sam’s katsudon, Moshi Koshi’s is at par in terms of taste and servings. I was able to try the Katsudon myself and decided that it has gained the top spot on my list.

Their Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box comes with 4 special sidings, rice and miso soup. I don’t really much care about the others except for the sidings which for me tasted like chicken salad. The chicken teriyaki was a tad bit sweet for my taste, but presentation-wise, it was one good looking bento box.

After the meals we were served with their homemade green tea and coffee ice cream. There’s only one green tea ice cream that appreciate by far, and that is the one they serve at Sachi. Thankfully, Moshi Koshi green tea ice cream was equally good that it gave me another option whenever the mean green tea ice cream cravings hit me. The coffee ice cream was equally worth raving about. It isn’t too sweet nor too bitter for its flavor, just the right combination of everything. I love its simplicity in terms of packaging, because once you tasted these ice creams, you wouldn’t be disappointed. Oh the element of surprise.

We arrived at the restaurant around 11 in the morning and there were no single customer in sight, but minutes before lunch time, the place was packed with people wanting to have their share of freshly cooked noodles, when we left the diner, there are still some people waiting to be seated. Considering that they are just new in the area, the acceptance of mass is really impressive. But what is more noteworthy is the authenticity of the food that they serve.

The place leans on the modern minimalist side of the spectrum. Since they made their own noodles every day, sanitation not just of the noodle room but of the entire place is one their priority. The accommodating food attendants were obviously knowledgeable about the food that they serve considering I throw in several questions about the dishes.

I rarely encounter a foodie place in which my urge to pay a visit again is that strong, Koshi Moshi is definitely one of them. With the noodles and other food they serve, you wouldn’t go wrong bringing a friend who isn’t really fond of noodles, because trust me, they will love Moshi Koshi.

Sweetest Afternoon of 2011

Okay, that’s one cheesy title, I know.

Well actually, it sounded very high school-ish (you know how your teacher made you write an essay about how did you spend your Christmas or summer vacation? And no matter how sucky it was, you're hard pressed to write about it because hey, who wanted those indelible red marks on their class cards anyway? No one. So, you write away, drawing inspiration from the most mundane title one could muster, “My Christmas / Summer Vacation”. Beat that. Most of my classmates hated it, but I love it to the core because I was an outcast-geek-nerd that way.) But that’s not my point.

Now let’s go back to the ~~cheesy title~~ sweetest afternoon of my 2011.

It happened during Lori Baltazar’s Dessert Comes First 6th Year Anniversary.

Dessert. Comes. First.

Now you know why the title, eh?

It was last April 9, 2011.

April. It was eons away, I know. But let's calm down, okay?

No, it wasn’t part of my backlogs. I wasn’t planning to write about it here at YeyLicious because it was something personal. I attended the party not because I wanted to write about it on my blog, but because I wanted to be part of the celebration of one of my favorite food blogs by one of the food writers I always look up to, Lori Baltazar. For me that was something really personal.

But then I thought that most of the lovely home bakers and foodies I have kept in touch all throughout this year, I met during the party. So, during times like this, when remembering the year that was is a must, I decided to share with you a flashback of some sort.

After all, memories of Dessert Comes First 6th Anniversary Party are meant to be savored. It is meant to linger and not rushed to be forgotten.

The party started during the afternoon and ended before night time. It was one party full of delicious food and desserts. Nothing is more beautiful than a room full of people gathered to celebrate one common ground, love for food, particularly desserts. Through Dessert Comes First, Lori made it possible.

I have a lot of sweet memories about this year, with the exception of my non-existent love life which is obviously not the point. But Lori’s Dessert Comes First 6th year Anniversary will always be special in more ways than one. And I am happy that before the year ends, I was able to share it with you my dear readers.

Tatung’s Garden Café by Chef Myke "Tatung" Sarthou

At one corner of the 12-seater private room painted in deep crimson red silently sat a pile of books. On top of it was a book about Dante Alighieri penned by Robert Royal. A few steps away from where I was seated lay a novel by Umberto Eco among many other titles by different authors. Outside the beautiful garden, right beside one of the many tables was an open cabinet were more books silently sat beside each other. Staring at the lovely rainy afternoon where only beautiful things are bound to happen.

I was at Tatung’s Garden Café.

There couldn’t be any other way to make me feel at home than the epiphany I have just witnessed.

What started out as a private kitchen, Chef Myke “Tatung” Sarthou’s abode right in the heart of Sikatuna Village in Quezon City is now transformed into a restaurant open for public even without reservation aptly called Tatung’s Garden Café. But despite the changes, the homey feel of the place wasn’t compromised. People can still enjoy Chef Tatung’s interpretation of traditional dishes in an ambiance that exudes a bend from the usual commercialized dining scene.

According to Chef Tatung, “Straightforward Filipino Dishes” are the three words that best describe the food that this garden café offers. Three words that reverberates in food preparation and echoes in every morsel of the dishes once it hits one’s palate.

Having created dishes out of inspiration at a given time, there used to be no staple menu at Chef Tatung’s private kitchen. But the transformation of what was once a reservation-only restaurant calls for a more concrete and detailed line up as it open its door to a wide range of customers. So during an intimate luncheon with some of my fellow foodie friends, Chef Tatung introduced to us some of the most delectable dishes included on their menu.

The luncheon started with a warm bowl of Molo Soup. While I’ve always favored cream based soup for a starter, Tatung’s Molo Soup isn’t bad either. The savory clear broth soup was light enough to whet my appetite as we waited for the next dishes.

For the appetizer we had Chicken Sisig Lettuce Wraps with Taro Shoestrings and Shrimp Okoy. I am big when it comes to Sisig. Given an option, there are two things that I consider a must when having Sisig. Rice or beer. These two in my opinion helps in cutting through the usual oily component of the dish. I never had it wrapped in lettuce before so it was a welcome change for me, and I enjoyed it. It helps that the Chicken Sisig wasn’t that oily to begin with while the lettuce adds a refreshing taste to the savory dish. The Shrimp Okay for me is just okay. I am not a big fan of Okoy, but the gushing of fellow foodies after taking a bite of their share I think says a lot about the dish.

Of the number of fried rice I have tasted over the years, Chef Tatung’s Favorite Fried Rice is definitely one of the best. Shrimp, carrots, peanuts, scrambled eggs, turmeric, and spring onions are pretty much the usual ingredients but the way that the taste blend with each other and the way the texture of the rice and the other components of this dish plays together was remarkably pleasing to the palate.

It can be easily pass off as Chicken Curry at first glance. But in terms of taste, Chef Tatung's Chicken in Roasted Coconut and Yellow Ginger Sauce is so much better than the usual Chicken Curry.. The chicken was so tender and upon my first bite, juices oozes out of the meat that makes it all the more savory. The yellow ginger sauce was surprisingly light to the palate. I appreciate that the taste of the ginger wasn’t too overwhelming. It just has the right amount of zing that gives its savory flavor an interesting kicks in every bite.

The push and pull of the sour-savory-sweet taste of the tamarind glaze was what made this rather simple crispy fried tilapia special. The skin was crispy; the meat was silky tender, and the rich sauce that binds the textures together adds pleasure to the tongue as the flavor willfully entertains the taste buds.

One of my favorites among the dishes that was served to us was the Calderetang Kambing with Queso de Bola. Caldereta is a savory dish by default but the incorporation of the rather strong flavor of queso de bola made this dish a feast of savory treat. The mutton ragout was so tender and every shred of its meat screams savory flavor.

What can you expect from a pork belly that has been slow roasted with garlic and lemon grass for four good hours in a brick oven? Chef Tatung’s Honey-Glazed Slow Roasted Pork Belly provides heavenly goodness that melts in your mouth after explosion of flavor that comes from the honey glaze.

Palabok Negra is basically rice noodles in squid ink sauce topped with slices of tender squid rings, smoked fish flakes, shrimp, chicharon, spring onions, and egg. I am not a big fan of squid ink on my food but this dish was worth the try. In fact, I can see myself having this again on my next visit.

Fresh Tuba Shake and Home Brewed Iced Tea

For the drinks we had the Fresh Tuba Shake and Home Brewed Iced Tea. I love how the Fresh Tuba Shake gives out the distinct taste of the tuba without the zing f alcohol. While I enjoyed the shake immensely, the Home Brewed Iced Tea that wasn’t too sweet was equally refreshing and enjoyable.

Tsoknut Chocolate Cake and Fresh Fruit Halo-Halo with Gata

Our hearty lunch was sealed with Warm Tsoknut Chocolate Cake and Fresh Fruit Halo-Halo with Gata. I was already full by dessert time but I the cake was too hard to resist. The rich flavor of the chocolate blends perfectly well with the distinct taste of the Tsoknut. I finished my share in no time because it was that good. The natural sweetness of the fruits and the leche flan were already good on its own, but the creaminess of the coconut and the ice cream adds another dimension to the Halo-Halo. While the cornflakes on top were definitely an added treat to the lovely play of texture.

Overall the dishes at Tatung’s Garden Café impressed me. The ingredients that Chef uses were obviously fresh making his dishes all the more palatable. Well thought out line up on the menu are all interesting which only steeled my resolve to visit the place again sometime soon.

Since it is located at the residential area, the place is quiet and comfortably homey. I heard the place looks stunning during night time, but I still have to find out.

From Makati take Edsa and make a right turn at Kamias (after Cubao and before GMA) Quezon city. SweetLeaf's Triple Chocolate Chip Mint Soft Batch Cookies

If you are into cookies, chocolates, mints, and all that sort of mind-blowing things and still have not tasted SweetLeaf’s Soft Batch Cookies yet, you are probably missing half of your life.

Trust me. I’ve missed mine.

But I regained it quickly.

When Spanky Enriquez, one of my foodie friends posted a photo and raved about how good SweetLeaf’s Triple Chocolate Chip Mint Soft Batch Cookies are, the very first thing I did was grabbed my phone and placed an order at SweetLeaf.

This season is the busiest time of the year for me that even a little tweak on my schedule is next to impossibility. But the thought of soft batch cookies with chocolate and mint is one of those that I couldn’t bend my conscience quite enough to ignore.

Soft cookies. Chocolate. Mint.

I am only human.

And a good one at that.

So, I immediately set a meet up with Celina De Guzman, one of the owners of SweetLeaf to grab myself some of their Soft Batch Cookies.

The meet up was scheduled on a Monday noon time. Traffic was heavy, weather wasn’t very cooperative, my hair took an unruly life of its own, and I was exhausted from going to different place to another in a span of just 4 hours since I woke up.

I was half paranoid that Celina might have a second thought selling me her cookies if she saw me all sweaty, worn down, and looking like I couldn’t even buy myself a decent hair brush.

Luckily, she handed me my order with all smile. Celina, well, she’s kind of really good looking young lady.

I was THIS close to asking her,

“Okay girlfriend, seriously, you bake? I mean, It’s been a while since I last baked because it’s pilling up on my pounds without a mercy and it’s messing up my heaven-forsaken metabolism. But you! You gorgeous slender good looking young lady actually bake ??? AND YOU MANAGE TO LOOK AS ADORABLE AS YOUR COOKIES??? HOW CAN LIFE BE SO UNFAIR???? GIVE ME MY COOKIES!!!!!!”

Okay, I only imagined that.

But trust me; Celina is one talented young lady who can rock the cookie world like it’s nobody’s business. And I assume her sister and business partner leans on the same spectrum.

So, after paying and having a little chat, I was almost ready to move on to my next itinerary.

Almost.

But the smell of the cookies wafting and rocking my nasal faculties was alarmingly intoxicating it weakened my knees.

So I called it a day, went home, and let myself get lost in a wonderful world of good books, warm milk, and the soft batch cookies I purchased.

I was curious more than anything else with the Triple Chocolate Chip Mint Cookies so that’s the first one I tried. After one bite, HAIL THE MOTHER OF ALL CHOCOLATE MINT COOKIES OUT THERE!!! Woot woot!!! HA! Gotcha!

No, I am not exaggerating my dear friends, because SweetLeaf’s Triple Chocolate Chip Mint Cookies are THE BOMB!

Uh huh! THE. BOMB.

It was the only one that has chocolate dough among the cookies that I have ordered so naturally, it stood out from the get go.

It was delicious to a fault. I love the contrasting rich flavor of chocolate with the sharp minty component of Andes Mint Chocolates that graces each cookie.

It has just the right level of softness and chewiness that doesn’t tire nor annoy my jaw line while munching on it.

And the smell, oh my goodness the smell! Heavenly. For only 120 Php / half dozen and 200 Php / one dozen, you'll definitely get your money's worth.

Given the right and very much deserving support from the International League of Cookies, ( okay, is there such a thing?) it has the possibility to put Keebler out of business.

Possibility. Okay? Don’t send me hate mails you Keebler’s fanatics!

Located at the 5th Amenity level of the new building, diners can enjoy the view of BGC skyline while feasting on fusion of local and international cuisines buffet spread.

Recently, together with some foodie friends, we visited F1 Hotel to try their dinner buffet.

I was able to take a peek of some of their rooms, but I would have to reserve that on a different post. Meanwhile, let me just share with you my experience during our dinner buffet.

Open-theater Kitchen

Sophisticated yet comfortable. A classy atmosphere that does not intimidate, rather it invites. In every corner lies different tables and chair set ups comfortable enough for one to linger even minutes after savoring such gastronomical experience. F Restaurant has as much ambiance as good food. Their open-theater kitchen gives their guest a view of their skilled chefs making their way in creating delectable fusion dishes that graces the buffet spread.

I can go on and on raving about the food that we have sampled on the buffet spread until I ran out of words to describe everything, but I'd rather not because seriously there are plenty of food presented. So let's just go visual, shall we?

The appetizer section boasts of different canapes, seasonal fruit selections, choices of cold cuts, different salads, varieties of sashimi and sushi, crabs and prawns.

Cold Cuts, Sashimi, Sushi

Varieties of main dishes were beautifully spread right where the open-theater kitchen is located. There were other diners during our visit, most of them frequent the buffet spread but the food attendants were quick to replenish everything.

Some of the main dishes on the buffet table were Beef Broccoli in Oyster Sauce, Roast Beef in Mushroom Sauce, Garlic and Ginger Squid, Vegetable Panache, Salt and Pepper Pork Ribs, and Steamed Fish Fillet Soy Sauce

Some of the dishes that I really enjoyed were Mixed Seafood in Chilli Garlic, Baby Back RIbs, and Mix Seafood Au Gratin

There are plenty more main dishes to choose from.

They also have Chinese soup and dimsum section, and create-your-own-pasta section

One of the things that F Restaurant boast of is their Jamon Serrano. We were told that this gorgeous creature cost 1500 Php. But now, anyone can have a slice or two or even more of Jamon Serrano upon availing of their buffet.

I love how I wouldn't have to leave my table just to have a taste of the Peking Duck, Roast Beef, and Suckling Pig because they are delivered in every table.

Although new to the scene Best Western Premiere F1 Hotel buffet offers an impressive line up of food which are all great tasting and filling. I am impressed with its beautiful ambiance, but the next time that i'll be back, i'll try dining at the pool side right outside the restaurant.

When availing of their buffet, I suggest that you should not miss the strolling food attendants armed with their carving knives and whatever it is that they offer such as the Jamon Serrano, Peking Duck, Roast Beef, and Suckling Pig. These alone are worth the money you'll be paying for. Baby Back Ribs and the Sea Food Au Gratin should not be missed as well for they are the best tasting dishes I've tried among the main dishes. While I love everything on their dessert section, the Amaretto Ice Cream was the one which gives my dinner buffet experience a sweet and pleasant ending.

Until December 30, 2011 you can avail of their buffet breakfast for only Php 788 Nett., and Php 1088 Nett for their lunch and dinner buffet.

Kaya Toast Set at Toast Box Philippines

It was a quick brunch, one among many where I am pressed for time to grab something quick otherwise; I’ll be late in a meeting or collapse while at it due to an empty stomach. While I’ve always relied on Kopi Roti and Yakun Kaya Toast for my Kaya Toast fix as breakfast, I’ve decided to try Toast Box this time considering it was the most convenient restaurant to go to at that time.

I would have tried those interesting looking dishes on their menu if only I wasn’t in a hurry. Instead, I grabbed their Traditional Toast Set just so I can have a prelude to a possible gastronomical affair. With all the raves, I admit to set a high expectation for Toast Box.

The set includes two soft-boiled eggs, kaya toasts, and a choice of kopi or teh (milk tea).

The soft-boiled eggs with yolks in golden hue were tainted beautifully as I pour soy sauce until it mostly settled at the bottom. Its entire beauty gently quivers when a dash of powdered pepper were thrown in. When everything were mixed all together, chromatic war ends while its creamy satin like feel to the palate begins.

Thick kaya spread gracing the soft-crunchy toasted white bread is already good on its own, but the creamy butter tempers the sweetness of the spread making its sweetness rather tolerable.

I like milk teas in general but I am a bit picky when it comes to it. Toast Box Teh has a perfect combination of everything a good milk tea should have, so after downing a cup of hot milk tea, I immediately order another, but this time I have it with ice.

I guess I have set an expectation way too high than I should because I was waiting for all fireworks to break loose on my first bite of the kaya toast, but apparently, there’s none. I was expecting something notable that will set them apart from the usual kaya toast available in other cafes or restaurants, and I found nothing. I cannot even set the difference between theirs and the one serve at Kopi Roti. But this doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth the try.

Probably the best thing that took them to a notch higher than their competitors is that they serve dishes other than the Kaya Toast Sets. Just like Kopi Roti and Ya Kun Kaya Toast, Toast Box Philippines is something I would go back to, especially that their dishes sounds enticing enough for me to schedule a visit when I am not in a hurry.

Some friends say that a visit at Boracay Island wouldn’t be complete without having a spa session. After all, it is almost always the culmination of one relaxing getaway. Good thing that our stay at Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel includes a spa session at the Mandarin Spa.

I was torn choosing between Traditional Filipino Hilot, which the Mandarin Spa was known for, and the Aroma Stone Therapy but decided to go with the latter. Traditional massage technique using volcanic basalt stone which promises to release muscular tension and balance the spirit sound mystically enticing to me, so I decided to give it a go.

An hour and a half after our festive welcome lunch at Don Vito Ristorante Italiano, we were scheduled to go to the Mandarin Spa for our session. The friendly receptionist asked us to choose which massage oil to use and while my friend chose Chamomile, I opted for Ylang-Ylang.

After giving us the keys to our lockers where we could keep our valuables, we were led to the shower area where the sauna was also located. A towel, bathrobe, shower cap, lotion and toothbrush set were provided for their guests’ use. After preparing, I was led to the massage room where the friendly therapist was already waiting.

The Aroma Stone Therapy session hasn’t started yet but the mellow music playing and the sound of the water gushing at the bamboo ornament inside the room were enough to calm my nerves and to sooth my senses. When the massage started, tranquility sets in, and everything else fades away.

I love the fact that the therapist was trained enough to skillfully provide a relaxing massage without going overboard nor the other way around in terms of pressure applied. I appreciate that I only have to tell her once that I can only take so much pressure, and the wonders of her hands remained consistent all throughout the session.

After the relaxing hour and a half of session, we were served with the Mandarin Spa Ginger Tea which has a spunky yet playful push and pull of spicy flavor with the sweet component that comes from the honey. It tasted so great that some of us requested for it to be served right after meal time instead of the usual tea.

I’ve experienced several spa sessions before but nothing compares to the one I had at Mandarin Spa. I could say that it may be the wonders of Boracay Island that made the experience all the more wonderful, but I know deep inside that it was more than that. Now I know for sure that Mandarin Spa will be included in my itinerary on my next visit to Boracay.

My stay at Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel was truly enjoyable. Despite my constant fear of allergies due to warm climate, the hotel did not just provide a comfortable little piece of heaven during my stay, but they gave me a grand time as well to enjoy things while I’m at the island.

First time I set foot at the hotel, I know for a fact that it wouldn’t be the last that I’ll be visiting them. Good thing that we were given a chance to take a look at some of the other rooms available at Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel so that the next time that I’ll be visiting them again, I know which one to pick.

Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel proved to be one of the hotels in the island to provide luxurious living in a tropical island with its Filipino design 52 bedrooms including suites that evokes a modern feel and ambiance.

You’ve pretty much have an idea how does our room, the Grand Deluxe Poolside Room looked like on my previous post. Now, let’s take a peek on the other rooms, shall we?

Premier Sea View

The Premier Sea View has one queen sized and one single bed. It has a balcony with a view of the Boracay shoreline and the hotel’s pool. We were told that one can opt for the same room with one king sized canopy bed which would be perfect for couple staying in.

Premier Deluxe Sea View

The Premier Deluxe Sea View room has a similarity with our room, the Grand Deluxe Poolside, only the bathroom is different but just like the Premier Sea View, and it has a balcony with stunning view of the place.

Ambassador Suite

The Ambassador Suite boasts of its outdoor lounging area and its own secluded pool located right outside the bedroom. It has its own in-room lounging area and private bar. Also, it has one king sized canopy bed, separate shower and bathtub. Reservation for this suite comes with complimentary broadband Internet access, 40" flat-screen LCD television, and iPod dock.

Mandarin Grand Suite

The Mandarin Grand Suite is slightly similar to Ambassador Suite but more spacious. It’s outdoor lounging area is arranged differently as well, and the pool is a tad bit larger than the Ambassador’s.

Penthouse Suite

While the two suites are perfect for people seeking of privacy in their stay at the hotel, their Penthouse Suite sets the comfort of privacy a notch higher. While it does not have an outdoor lounging area and a pool, it boasts of its separate shower and bathtub with a view.

Function Room

We were also given a chance to check out their function room for guests on a business trip. I was surprised at how affordable their packages are for the function room use, and it can even be customized based on their guest’s needs.

Part of the services and facilities that Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel offers are laundry service, evening turndown service, and swimming pool for child and adult.

For guests who wants to party at night, Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel has Buco Bar and Grill. Live band performances, fire dancing, and delicious sea food can be enjoyed while partying the night away with your favorite beer or cocktail drinks. After all the fun and the activities, there couldn’t be any other relaxing way but to spend an hour or two at Mandarin Spa and be rejuvenated. And what makes a trip complete are the food that calls to be savored. Another pride that the hotel has is their award winning Don Vito Ristorante Italiano. More on these things on my next posts.

Seeing some of the other rooms and experiencing some of the hotel’s services and amenities, only steeled my resolve to go back with my loved ones and experience the grand things that the island and Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel has to offer.

Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel (Part 1)

Of the number of things about me that usually attracts raised eye brows and questionable look is the fact that I can always trade a trip to the beach over a quiet time inside my room curls up at the comfort of my bed while reading a good book. I am not a beach person. While I have submitted to the fact that I can never have a good time at the beach, little did I know, Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel will soon change that.

During summer, all my friends and relatives are having a good time of their life sun bathing, swimming, and doing other beach activities for all I care, while you can find me lounging at some place nowhere near the sun rays. No I am not afraid to get tan, although it’s such a sorry excuse, I hope it’s my sole reason for not liking the beach at all. But no. It just so happen that I am one of those unlucky ones who must not stand long exposure to heat otherwise mean allergies will eat me alive. Sad, I know.

But I always believe that there are things worth taking the risk.

So, when I was presented with the opportunity to visit Boracay recently, for the first time, I took it. I was a little apprehensive at first, but after hearing good things about Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel where we will be staying, I gave it a go. Now, I am still alive and needless to say, I never regretted it. Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel changed the way I look at the notion of “having fun at the beach”. And I am thankful.

The transfer from one place to another went smoothly as it was handled by Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel. There was never a time that I felt uncomfortable despite my fear of my health condition and the anxiety of what to expect.

After checking in, we were led to our designated room. My friend Donver (he’s a nurse, see how I play it safe?) who was with me during that time and I were assigned to the Grand Deluxe Poolside Room. I was a bit tired from the trip so when I was greeted with the sight of king sized canopy bed, I wanted to take a rest and do the usual thing I do when I’m at a beach, locked myself in the room. But the thought of leisurely welcome lunch at the hotel’s Don Vito Ristorante is way enticing than just curling up in my bed.

Aside from the king size canopy bed, there’s also a futon bed right beside it and a sofa set on the other side. A heart-shaped towels and some note were placed on our bed as a welcome gesture. The room was equipped with the usual mini bar, mini refrigerator, LCD TV, and newspaper supply.

One thing that endears me the most to our room was the bathroom. Situated at the middle part in between the shower and the toilet is the bath tub. The spacious bathroom was loaded with the usual stuff like the towels, bathrobe, umbrellas, hair dryer, and bathroom kit.

While our room was lovely enough for me to have a grand time at the hotel, the view from our room was equally stunning which made me think that it isn’t going to be my first and last time at Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel.

This is not the end of my wonderful experience at Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel, this is just a start. In the next series of posts I will be sharing with you my awesome gastronomical experiences at Don Vito Italian Ristorante and the most rejuvenating 1 and a half hour I had at Mandarin Spa. We were also given a chance to take a look at the other rooms which I will be sharing with you as well.

Due to my health condition, I have never been a beach person. But Mandarin Island Hotel helped me changed all that notion which keeps me from enjoying one of the best thing that this life has to offer. So, come back and share this story with me okay?
